Old Cairo
I produced this etching after a visit to Cairo. Old Cairo, which is the oldest part of the city and was called Babylon, was the site of a Roman Fortress built by the Emperor Trajan. It became the site of the first Coptic Church and it is now a very interesting museum.
The architecture and decorative elements here are beautiful and are reflected in my print in the tiles and arches in the lower half. The tower and rings in the upper half are inspired by the design on a Egyptian
pound note.
An etching is produced by the action of acid biting into unprotected parts of a metal plate. This plate was inked in black and then a very transparent layer of Raw Sienna was rolled over the plate prior to printing.
